What is cosmetic dentistry?

Cosmetic, or aesthetic dentistry is a branch of dentistry that deals with the overall health and harmony of the whole mouth and creating a perfect smile. It is offered to people that have asymmetry in their smile, with overcrowding.

Why is cosmetic dentistry performed?

Dental aesthetic treatment is aimed at achieving a perfect smile. It is used to treat problems such as:

  • Dental asymmetry
  • A gap between the front teeth
  • Tooth discolouration
  • Cavities in the area nearest the gum
  • Chips in the teeth

What does cosmetic dentistry involve?

Aesthetic dentistry treatments include:

  • Tooth whitening, to give the teeth a more uniform colour and a whiter shade
  • Orthodontic treatment, aimed at correcting bite problems and aligning the teeth
  • Dental veneers, which offer a quick way to correct changes in tooth colour and shape
  • Dental implants, used to replace missing teeth and to fill in gaps left in the mouth for various reasons

Preparing for cosmetic dental treatments:

Before the procedure you must have your teeth cleaned in order to remove any tartar build-up and to ensure a better final result. You will also be advised not to smoke and to moderate your consumption of coffee and any other drinks or food that could stain your teeth.

Post-treatment care:

To maintain the result of the treatment, you must follow good oral hygiene practices. This means having a good brushing technique and flossing after every meal. Regular check-ups with the dentist and teeth cleaning will also be necessary to maintain the result. You should avoid smoking and consume beverages such as coffee, tea, wine and soft drinks in moderation. You should also be careful with your bite and avoid grinding your teeth.
