Upper eyelid filler is a treatment to add volume to the upper eyelids, and to give a more youthful appearance. It involves the injection of a filler into the upper eyelid, to improve a hollow appearance that can occur over time as the skin loses fat cells, leading to a more sunken appearance, and with a darker skin tone.
Eyelid filler treatments can also be used for functional reasons such as to help the eyelid to close where there are physical problems limiting this, such as because of facial palsy following a stroke.
What does upper eyelid treatment involve?
A series of small injections will be given around the upper eyelid, using a dermal filler. This will give a plumper appearance to the skin on the upper eyelids. Hyaluronic acid is used as a filler, often with some anaesthesia included to help reduce any pain associated with the injections.
Although some anaesthesia is used, it is not always necessary as patients report that the pain from the injections is minimal.
Some swelling and possible bruising is likely following the procedure, but this will reduce after a few days. Despite the initial swelling, the results will be seen almost instantaneously.
Why would you have upper eyelid filler?
The eyelids can begin to appear hollow as you age, and to appear darker in colour. This is due to the skin losing elasticity, and losing the fat cells which give a fuller appearance to the skin. This is a natural process as we age, but in some people the affects can appear more prominent if it runs in the family, and they may want to correct this.
Another kind of filler treatment is adding weights into the upper eyelid to help them to close if they do not function as they should. This may be due to facial palsy or paralysis associated with a stroke.
How long do the results last?
The hyaluronic acid filler will last around one year following the surgery, giving a fuller appearance to your eyelids. Repeat applications can be given as necessary.
If you are not happy with the results, it is possible to reverse them using an enzyme injection which dissolves the hyaluronic acid.
