What is paediatric urology?

Paediatric urology is a subspecialty of urology that specialises in malformations of the urogenital system of children and adolescents. Some of them require surgical attention and others do not.

What conditions does a paediatric urologist treat?

The main conditions treated by a paediatric urologist are:

• Phimosis
• Paraphimosis
• Varicocele
• Cryptorchidism (undescended testes)
• Hypospadias (malformation of the urinary and genital system)
• Urinary incontinence (bedwetting)
• Pelvic Ureteric Junction obstruction (PUJ)
• Bladder or kidney stones
• Genitourinary malformations
• Neurogenic bladder (related to spina bifida)

When should I go to the child urologist?

Children should be taken to a paediatric urologist when they have abnormalities in their urogenital system, such as phimosis, urinary incontinence, or malformations. When in doubt, it is always preferable to go to a GP for specialist referral.
